THE ASK

When the Bigstone Cree Nation Education Authority (BCNEA) embarked on its monumental plan to build a new, state-of-the-art high school in Wabasca, stakeholders began to look for practical yet innovative ways to maximize productivity while saving both time and money. They soon determined that constructing a separate building to serve as the school’s gymnasium would be a cost-effective move.

Wanting a high-performing, energy-efficient structure that could be erected much faster than a conventional gymnasium, they turned to Sprung for the ideal building solution.

HOW SPRUNG DELIVERED

Sprung designed and delivered a 140’ x 175’ gymnasium structure that fits in beautifully with its surrounding buildings, including the new high school. Fully insulated, the highly versatile structure houses a top-of-the-line running track, workout areas complete with strength training and cardio equipment, two high-definition screens, and a hardwood basketball court featuring BCN’s logo in the center. To maximize efficiency, the building also features a dividing curtain that allows for simultaneous activities or PE classes, as well as a locker rooms, shower facilities, offices for staff and teams, and separate, secure entrances for after-school activities.

By single sourcing the Sprung gymnasium, the school board saved an extensive amount of money, which allowed them to increase the size of the new high school by almost 50 percent.
