THE ASK
In March 2020, it was determined that Joseph Brant Hospital needed to increase bed capacity in order to be ready for the anticipated surge of COVID-19 patients. Officials at JBH turned to Sprung to design and deliver a temporary Pandemic Response Unit that could be erected on hospital grounds as quickly and safely as possible.
HOW SPRUNG DELIVERED
Sprung designed and delivered an 8,250-square-foot structure that provided an additional 93 patient beds. Built in conjunction with BLT Construction, this Pandemic Response Unit became the first of its kind in Ontario and was completed and operational within just two weeks. Carefully designed to minimize the spread of infectious particles, the fully insulated structure featured a negative pressure environment, which was maintained by an air-lock system that allowed patients to be transported to and from the hospital’s South Tower via a Sprung-supplied tunnel.
Freeing up acute care space within the main hospital, JBH’s Pandemic Response Unit brought crucial support to COVID-19 patients with mild to moderate symptoms who required care they could not get at home, such as oxygen therapy, special medication, and ongoing monitoring of symptoms. During later stages of the pandemic, the space was repurposed to serve as a vaccination site.
