THE ASK

For well over a century, URM has made a significant impact in bringing hope and healing to the homeless population of Skid Row. But in recent years, delivering aid and providing shelter to those in need has become increasingly challenging due to the mounting number of people experiencing homelessness in the neighborhood. In 2019, with a specific aim to help the many unhoused and vulnerable women of Skid Row, URM sought an immediate solution for more shelter space on its premises.

HOW SPRUNG DELIVERED

After looking at a number of interim solutions, URM chose Sprung Structures to design and build a 40’ wide x 105’ long code-compliant shelter. Shipped within three weeks and built in a timely and cost-effective manner, the fully insulated, clear-span structure is a safe, secure environment designated for single women being devastated by homelessness. This permanent and spacious structure was installed on the parking lot in the rear of the Union Rescue Mission. The site includes wraparound services and is a place of healing and respite. It was also used temporarily by the Los Angeles Health Department during the Covid outbreak to assist those with medical needs living on Skid Row.
