THE ASK
In mid 2023, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences was in need of a new visitor information and education center for its Contentnea Creek location. Stakeholders wanted a bright, open facility that would provide a welcoming environment for all kinds of guests, from families and school groups to outdoor enthusiasts and astronomy buffs. Sprung was commissioned to design a unique, cost-effective structure that would complement the aesthetics of the existing buildings on-site, which include a planetarium and observatory.
HOW SPRUNG DELIVERED
Sprung designed and delivered a 6,000-square-foot, fully insulated structure that incorporates the museum’s official colors both inside and out. Featuring a clear-span interior, daylight panels and a 45-foot glazing wall for optimal natural light, the new facility provides a bright and welcoming atmosphere, with ample space to accommodate two classrooms, three offices, a gift shop, restrooms and exhibit areas. Known officially as the Nancy and John Bray Environmental Education and Visitor Center, the structure was built and operational within a matter of months.
