THE ASK
The Piikani Nation wanted a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose arena built in their main community of Brocket. In addition to serving as a high-end hockey and sports facility, it was hoped the arena could also help to further unite members of the community and promote the benefits of physical activity.
As Brocket is situated in a location that frequently experiences extreme wind loads, the Piikani Nation needed a durable, high-performance structure that could withstand challenging weather conditions.
HOW SPRUNG DELIVERED
Sprung designed and delivered a fully insulated, 130’ x 350’ arena structure that includes a full-sized ice rink, seating for 448 spectators, a concession and food prep area, and a high peak height that enhances the sense of spaciousness inside. Other features include six large dressing rooms (four for men, two women), a referee room, and ample administrative space.
Built-in alliance with ATCO Sustainable Communities, the Piikani Nation’s ice arena was completed in just ten months and is engineered to meet sustained wind loads of up to 110 miles per hour.
