THE ASK
In early 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold around the world, healthcare providers had to find new or different ways to meet ever-mounting patient care needs. Working in partnership with Infrastructure Ontario, stakeholders at RVH decided it would be prudent to add a regional Pandemic Response Unit to the hospital’s campus. This structure, which would serve as an overflow unit for hospitals throughout the Simcoe Muskoka region, had to be built quickly and on budget. RVH turned to Sprung for a solution.
HOW SPRUNG DELIVERED
Sprung designed and delivered a temporary, state-of-the-art Pandemic Response Unit that was erected and ready for use within 10 weeks. The unit consists of two Sprung structures, the larger of which serves as a primary patient care area that houses 70 patient bays. Fully insulated for year-round operation, the building also features an HVAC system for proper air filtration and ventilation, as well as a dedicated oxygen system, a nurse call system for each patient bay, nursing stations, and a raised floor with a medical-grade finish.
The smaller structure is also fully insulated and serves as a dedicated washroom area, with 10 patient bathrooms and a shower. In addition to these structures, Sprung designed and delivered two enclosed, fully insulated walkways, one of which connects the two Sprung structures, and one that connects the patient care building directly to the main hospital building.
