THE ASK

Founded in 2008, SAIT’s Green Building Technology Access Centre (GBTAC) is a place where researchers work together with industry partners and students to identify and develop environmentally friendly technologies, processes and services, with the aim of developing and enhancing net-zero construction solutions in Canada and beyond.

When stakeholders at SAIT realized that the temporary structure they had put in place to serve as extra lab space at the GBTAC was not meeting the needs of the research team, they approached Sprung for a solution. Not only had Sprung worked with SAIT on a previous gymnasium project, both organizations had also been sharing information and findings around green building approaches and materials. Selecting a Sprung structure to serve as a new GBTAC lab was a natural, and cost-effective, choice. SAIT stakeholders wanted a durable, energy-efficient structure that could be built quickly and perform well in Alberta’s often-frigid winters—and they knew Sprung could deliver.

HOW SPRUNG DELIVERED

Sprung designed and delivered a fully insulated, 80’ x 75’ structure to serve as the GBTAC’s primary lab for research, training and demonstrations. Requiring three different anchoring systems in order to accommodate existing ground infrastructure, this bright, clear-span building features a large rolling service door, as well as a convenient connecting corridor that links to the main GBTAC facility. Researchers are able to travel between the two areas with ease, and they now have an additional 6,350 square feet of space for testing new technologies.
