THE ASK

For more than 20 years, the Town of Mammoth Lakes had been actively searching for a permanent building solution to house an indoor ice rink and multi-use facility that could provide its residents and visitors with year-round access to high-quality, indoor recreational activities. Upon entering into a partnership with the LA Kings (a franchise in the National Hockey League), the town and its various stakeholders intensified their search for an affordable building solution that could accommodate an Olympic-sized ice rink in the winter months and various court-based sports in the summertime. After carefully researching their options, they chose to go with a Sprung structure thanks to its bright, clear-span design, exceptional durability and proven performance.

HOW SPRUNG DELIVERED

Sprung designed and delivered a 40,000-square-foot structure to serve as a year-round indoor recreational facility for the Town of Mammoth Lakes. Known locally as the Community Recreation Center (CRC), the structure features dual layer insulation, tall peak heights, daylight panels for ample natural light and an attractive blue, grey and white exterior membrane.

Since opening the CRC has become a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. From October to April, the CRC encloses an Olympic-sized ice rink (known officially as LA Kings Ice at Mammoth Lakes) where skaters can play hockey or enjoy other ice sports. Then, in the summer months, the rink is transformed into the Mammoth RecZone, a three-court gymnasium that serves as a hub for a multitude of court sports, events and activities.
